San Francisco's Japantown neighborhood comes to life in spring when the cherry blossoms start blooming. For two consecutive weekends, the annual Cherry Blossom Festival being held April 14-22,2018 is one of California's most prominent Celebrations of Asian traditions and serves to cultivate the continued alliance between Japan and the United States using culture as the bridge. Enjoy this dazzling display showcasing the grace and color of the Japanese culture and diversity of the Japanese American community.

The celebration includes traditional music, dance, and other cultural activities. And of course, during the festival, you can sample a variety of Japanese and Japanese-American culinary treats. These include popular dishes such as fresh sushi, tempura, and chicken or beef teriyaki.

Celebrate Earth Day and Opening Day on the Bay on April 22, 2018. Kick off sailing season on the San Francisco Bay with a festive boat parade and the blessing of the fleet!

Explore the Mysteries of Alcatraz

Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay, offers a close-up look at the site of the first lighthouse and US built fort on the West Coast and the infamous federal penitentiary long off-limits to the public. Often referred to as The Rock, there is also a natural side to the island which include gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and bay views beyond compare.

The prison on Alcatraz was designed to hold prisoners who continuously caused trouble at other federal prisons. Given the high security and the location of Alcatraz in the cold waters and strong currents of San Francisco Bay, the prison operators believed Alcatraz to be escape-proof. 1,576 of Americas most ruthless criminals including Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud (the Birdman of Alcatraz), George Machine Gun Kelly, Bumpy Johnson, Rafael Cancel Miranda, Mickey Cohen, Arthur R. Doc Barker, James Whitey Bulger, and Alvin Creepy Karpis (who served more time at Alcatraz than any other inmate).

Get to know Walt through early drawings and animation, movies, music, and listening stations featuring his own voice, among others.

Experience the joy of PEANUTS....
View the largest collection of original Peanuts art work in the world at the Charles M. Schulz Museum. Visitors can laugh at Schulz’s original comic strips, learn about the art of cartooning and Schulz’s role in its development, view a re-creation of Schulz’s art studio, watch animated Peanuts specials and documentaries in our Theatre, and draw their own cartoons in our hands-on education room.

Asian Art Museum
